Rockmouse was the second-best tracker in the Brotherhood of Gnomes, right behind Fernlodth; a critical skill, however, of all trackers is the gift of being able to out-think the quarry and anticipate, and in this, Rockmouse was better.
It took her very little time to locate the cabin, and only seconds later to discover Fernlodth sitting, legs folded comfortably on a blanket on the front lawn, sharing oranges and a hot beverage with the cat-faced woman. Somehow, the woman had detected the gnome-woman’s presence immediately, her midnight blue eyes fixated on the exact spot in the ferns where Rockmouse crouched.
“It’s all right, Rockmouse,” called Fernlodth, holding up a section of the orange and drawling “This isn’t what it looks like!”
“You leave me no choice, Ferndloth,” answered Rockmouse, desperately adding the one thing that might draw him away, “I challenge you to a game of Mumblety-Peg, Chicken style!”

The editor in me noticed “fixedated” instead of “fixated,” unless that’s some gnome-ish term??
