“Me?!” scoffed Ferah, then admitting, “Okay, yes, Jimann was very distracting at first…”

“Oh yes,” Montay murmured, smiling with memory and feeling a heated rush beneath the tunic he’d borrowed from his sister, adding almost absently, “there was that thing he does with his tongues…”

The fly settled and rubbed its front feet together on the fragrant and greasy hunk of meat that lay palmed and cradled between Montay’s curled fingers.

“I remember,” snapped Ferah, “but the thing is, he’s all technique and no heart, so it got old pretty quick—dull and repetitious—like his power grabs it’s just bad for everyone but him.”

“Ouch,” shrieked Montay, slapping his hand over meat and the fly that had viciously bit him. At that moment, the fly shifted and grew, trapping and crushing Montay’s hand beneath its large, sharp hooves.
