The pop was loud enough to wake me from my favorite dream: barefoot on a tropical moonlit deck in a shared deckchair with my current celebrity crush, the pop of the champagne cork shooting straight to regions unnamed but known well.
Except that it hadn’t been a champagne cork this time, but the sound of my furnace fuse going out again; not a good thing to have happen on a frigid winter’s night in a cold northern climate.
Still, I hugged the dream tight under my pile of blankets, hoping to recapture that lovin’ feeling. But it was no use because before long, my nose went numb, my cheeks started to smart, and the cold crept into my toes, even through the thick woolen socks I wore nightly to keep heating costs down (note there were never any socks in my dream, not on me nor on him).
I caved, slid socks into slippers as I rolled out of bed, snatching the top quilt to wrap around me as I descended to the dungeon of my unfinished basement and padded my way to the old-school fuse box.
Time to face the music, girl: break into the emergency funds, and call the electrician for an upgrade to a modern breaker box.

We dread every time that emergency fund takes a hit, don’t we, even if that’s what it’s there for, because then there’s the scrimping to replace it. An excellent tale.

ya gotta love the subconscious mind’s capacity to, in the interest of extending the necessary sleeptime, incorporate disturbing (or not) sounds in our non-dreaming environment, in our dream …story/plot/narrative

Funny how life can wake us through our dreams. Mighty frigid wake up call but hey, next time will be a simple flip of a switch then back to tropical moonlit deck!

It sounds like that fuse box needed to be replaced. Nice description of how one reached the decision to replace it.
