Part 4
A wheel of cheese will always roll faster than a flat-bottomed bowl heavy with creamed herring, especially if the herring’s path is blocked by a platter heaped with cold sausages and a basket of heavy brown bread.
The disaster is delayed if not diverted, and all—the three sleepy boys in a wooden sailing shoe, green-eyed feline Sylvia crouched to pounce with snapping tail stilled, clever Jack assessing his chances of getting at least part of that wheel for his hungry family—hold a collective breath.
The sideboard’s contents are splattered, but will the bowl continue its tumble and shatter, waking Dame Lorelai?
Former enemies join forces as Sylvia leaps deftly and Jack scrabbles backward to counterbalance; the sideboard tips back and rights, bowl barely sloshing. The two now-compatriots turn on the boys with not quite murder in their eyes, but ready to rock the boat and gnaw on the terrified trio.
And Dame Lorelai, from the darkness of the kitchen doorway, straightens her nightcap and rubs the tip of her nose to belay a sneeze…or perhaps it is a snort?
Part 5
“Dammit children,” Dame Lorelai curses and growls as she steps into the kitchen, slippers scuffing the worn hardwood floor, “I should just leave you to explain yourselves to the trolls…they’re due any minute!”
Wynken, Blynken, and Nod peer cautiously over the edge of their wooden shoe ship at the frightfully large woman, wild hair scarcely contained by her snowy nightcap, just now registering that the cat and the mouse are also giant-sized.
They slide back down into the footbed and snatch off their caps (striped, chef’s, and visored top hat) into trembling hands, looking more ready to have milk poured onto them than to deal with the additional trouble they’ve raised.
“Have we shrunk in our sleep?” whispers Nod.
“Surely this is just a bad dream,” suggests Blynkin.
“But I’m still hungry,” exclaims Wynken, suppressing a sob.

(clapping my hands…) This is fabulously visual and noisy, and I’m left breathless (because I forgot to breathe!) 😂
