The challenge? Write a story in 6 sentences, no more & no less, and if you’d like, share your creation or just visit and comment on others’ ideas, with GirlieOnTheEdge, Denise. The prompt is “Distance”, and here’s where you join the party: Six Sentence Stories
Amber didn’t know why she was so shocked that it had happened once again, under almost identical circumstances, with the same person; everyone else seemed to get it but her friend, Mae.
She was beginning to think that this vow to go the distance might well be the wrong decision, because how many times do you explain to a friend that what they were doing was so hurtful, and so destructive to the friendship?
Either they care, or they don’t; perhaps they simply can’t…or your own expectations are, in fact, hurtful to them. That last thought hit her like a bomb drop: her rigid expectation that Mae be “better”, to be different than who she truly was, caused its own critical damage.
Amber rocked back in her chair, flushed with shame, and started the painful journey of detaching from her desire to get what she needed from Mae.
It was the most loving thing she could do.

Brilliant she was able to look into herself like that, and honest that she felt some shame. A powerful ending line.

And isn’t that what we all need to do to heal a broken heart?

Nice descriptive phrase: “the painful journey of detaching from her desire”

“It was the most loving thing she could do.”
This short piece shows such growth for the character, in her realization, admission, and in her willingness to make that painful journey.

If only growth in real time worked like that.

Sometimes people make the same kind of mistake over and over until they finally learn the lesson they are meant to learn.

As the 12-Steppers say, expectations are premeditated resentments.

And the most practical thing to do! To realize her expectations come from her perspective, her personal reality and that Mae may not share in that same perspective. Kind of takes the burden off Amber, wouldn’t you say?
