Me and my cargo have been waiting by the side of this road, near all day. The sun’s hot, ground’s dry, trees hard with the lack of rain, and Trevor never did show up this morning to drag us the rest of the way to the rail station, just a quarter of a mile away. The first and last train will have come and gone by now, I reckon.

A wider bite draws pale flesh in and rolls it expertly over the tongue.
Molar work seeks tart and sweet, drives flesh and juice to tumultuous release.
Swallow and savor the journey to core.
Thus settled, it satisfies, but really, you want more.

They’d packed coffee and sandwiches, heading out, bike trails edging around lakes green with duckweed, geese and duck leaving their own paths as they nibbled, non-stop snacking to prepare them for the winter.
