Who Shall Inherit the Earth?

It is hot and humid in the back alley of a city that was increasingly—chokingly—becoming overwhelmed by urbanization.

If she’d been any other kind of creature than a coywolf, she might well have been one of the myriad of species that had died off as human overpopulation, climate change, and capitalism shook their hard fists at the surface of planet Earth and dug their sharp fingers deep into its inner core; her kind chose, instead, to interbreed and adapt instead of becoming extinct.

The full moon rises above the tall, toothed buildings, pouring silver into nearly every inch of the broken bricked street, and in response, rat-sized cockroaches skitter into every foundation and crack.

Growling, chuckling, she stretches and rises as fire stirs in her silky belly and pours its heat through her strong loins. She feels confident that tonight, her kind might well inherit the Earth.

Raising her sharp nose to the muggy breeze, she catches a musk, a beckoning scent, and trots out of the alleyway to find a mate.

  6. I really like this Liz – she doesn’t feel like a tragic victim – she’s confident, sensual, hungry, adaptive, and slightly dangerous – and maybe she really is going to inherit the Earth🙌
