The Council of Peacekeepers had gathered in the sunlit hollow above the Great Falls to celebrate Ferah’s naming day and full induction into the council; her older brother, Montay, had been lobbying for a change in mission and had other plans for the meeting.
“I have to disagree with you, Montay,” said Ferah, too close to losing her cool and shouting at her recalcitrant brother, instead took a soothing breath and added “You know that I’m right to remind you how long and hard we’ve worked to build and maintain peace between the various fae nations with whom we share this continent.”
“I’m just saying that as we attempt to engage with other nations overseas, we need to make damn sure that our particular family of fae are the ruling class,” Montay snapped, eyes dilating and claws extending as he hissed, “No one else is better suited to rule, and reap the benefits of all the riches to come.”
“We already have all we need and can easily get the extras we don’t have on hand—like jewels and spices, oranges and blueberries, wild rice and acorns—by trade with our northern neighbors,” Ferah growled and stood, tail twitching furiously, then added in the calmest tone possible, “It’s really been working well to gather allies across the continent.”
“If we’re going to rule the entire world, we must conquer our fae nations here at home—the gnomes and trolls and such-like beasts—to ensure that our family of shapeshifters commands the lion’s share,” answered Montay, with a cold chuckle and side-eye to his many supporters.
Her tail froze and she sat down hard, shocked at the volume of cheers and laughter at his words; Ferah hadn’t realized how many supporters her charismatic brother had gathered.

Valley of the Trolls 
It’s such a brilliant detail that the very things they are arguing over—jewels and spices—are the things Montay is willing to risk everything to conquer, showing how quickly ambition can unravel years of careful work. That final sentence, where Ferah realizes the shocking number of his supporters, is a truly powerful mic drop moment.
