Devon had to admit it; Beau was a handsome lad who had all the right moves, intense green eyes, whiskers neat, and thick silky hair that Ella kept running her fingers through.
Ella was HIS girlfriend, his intended, and he glared jealously at the impudent beast lying in her arms, receiving her caresses as if he was entitled to all that he desired. Devon growled in frustration and received a narrow-eyed glare and a hiss.
“Oh, poor baby Beau,” murmured Ella as she, pitching woo to her latest shelter cat, soothed his hiss into rumbling purrs as she rubbed her fingers along his jaw and neck.
That was it: he had to accept that he could never compete with her love of rescuing animals.
Bowing his head in sorrowful resignation, he quietly pulled Ella’s apartment door closed behind him.

Not easy being “2nd best” to a cat, no matter how beautiful Beau is. Devon seems to have made his choice. Probably best for all involved!

I’m with D. Avery. Dude needs to grow up. (though the kind of growing up that leaves a sense of perspective in which you’re not the only thing in the world, is probably a childhood stage… way tougher to learn as a near-adult)

At first I thought maybe Devon was also a cat. If he can’t accept and join her and her Beau, he might as well go. She doesn’t need a sulky two legged beast.

I just returned from visiting my son’s family, and their 4 kittens —who’ve taken to the habit of weeing on their black leather sofa, so that when you sit down, the wee soaks into your dress and undies (and/or trousers since my husband also managed to sit in their frequent puddlings) … which reinforced my reasons — I have no cat.
