On Tap? Root Beer

Six Sentence Stories

It was a dark and stormy night, and the World War I Flying Ace, long since retired, having worked on his Great American Novel all morning and all afternoon, had finally reached the final page.

He peered over his large, rounded nose and between his furry feet, leaning over the typewriter.

Woodstock and family twittered quietly to one another, perched on his stack of completed pages so that the wind wouldn’t blow them away and cause him to retype the entire thing.

He “hmmmed” and squinted and scratched the itchy spot on his ear and underneath his leather pilot’s helmet, then snapped his fingers as a light bulb literally appeared over his head.

He had it, the final ingredient, the last words of the bloody Red Baron as, for the last time, he spiraled down in flames!

Typing the final words, he bundled up the pages, placing his typewriter on top to secure them; at long last, they could all celebrate his success together!

  1. And as he utters a final, ‘Curse you, Red Baron’, he lets his mind drift to the evenings he spent in dimly-lit French cafes quaffing root beer and flirting outrageously with the girls. No, he thinks, I was right not to mention these evenings in my memoir.’ Thank you, Liz, for featuring my enduring hero in your story. I could see the whole episode. Just a pity that Schulz is not here to draw it. Delightful story, beautifully written.
