Coming Home

Abstract spiral on black backgroundShe knew the caverns like the back of her hand at this point, and was able to navigate to the furthest reaches, into the darkest corners, without need of light.

She felt the cold sand under her naked feet, the thin hairs of slime as she passed her fingertips along the surface of the tunnel, and the change of air flow and temperature when she lifted her palm a mere two inches from the wall’s surface.

Short sips of air caressed her tongue with a metallic tang as she neared the underground pool, and her ears popped as she dropped and gracefully slid down the granite hill worn smooth by generations of the Faithful, balanced on their heels as she was now.

The pool glowed at her approach, and although she felt its welcoming pulse, she could not see it.

Stepping the remaining distance to the water’s edge with confidence, she dipped her fingers into its mineral shallows and lifted her hand to her nose, and then her lips, the scent and taste opening up her remaining two senses.

She cherished these times of connection with the ancestors.

  1. Excellent journey through those caverns, Liz, I felt I was there with all senses awakened. Love the line: “Short sips of air caressed her tongue with a metallic tang”. Looking forward to Part II now to maybe find out some backstory about the ancestors.

    For sure that evokes “tactile”! You transported us seamlessly with your character as she made her pilgrimage. However! You’ve peaked my curiosity about “the Faithful”, glowing pools and “ancestors” 😀
