Yes, it was inconvenient that tracker Rockmouse was extremely cautious, especially since gnome Fernlodth’s trust in Ferah (honestly earned) was almost an afterthought, as automatic and natural as breathing a sweet winter’s dream.
Also inconvenient was that the tracker gnome’s extra caution also split her attention; this meant the cat-faced woman carried the extra load of maintaining a safe space for both gnomes, as well as for herself.
Worse, with Ferah’s unpredictable nemesis, Montay, prowling above in the tree branches, her precious work to create an alliance could too easily be shattered with the snap of a toothy jaw, the rake of a single razor claw.
Fernlodth trusted her, when really, he shouldn’t; her motives to create such an alliance weren’t as pure as all that.
Ferah had convinced the two to enter the cabin and stay the night and out of Montay’s clutches, but Rockmouse had SEEN beyond her glamour, of this she was certain.
She had no choice but to confess (some of) her motives, and enlist their aid; only through mutual cooperation were they going to survive whatever Montay might have up his metaphorical sleeve.

Better to have an alliance built on truth. Anything less falls apart in the clutch.

Oooh, alliances can be such sticky little things — but who will be allies with whom? This is so much fun!

It seems that Montay, being Ferah’s nemesis, may not be on any one’s side.

Perhaps only his own side? 😉
