The image is too perfect, too symmetrical, with none of the off-kilter that would give it the semblance of life, of moving and breathing humanity.
This whatever-it-was before me is dead, or more accurately said, has never been alive.
“Nu uh, nope,” I said, and shaking my head, I pushed myself away from the table, adding, “This isn’t going to work for me.”
It tipped its head to one side, accessing its internal protocol and cross-checking the specifications I’d checked off on the online form, and in velvet tones questioned, “Would you care to modify your original input, or perhaps upgrade to the next level, for a mere 257 parakleps, as you are a first-time subscriber?”
“This wasn’t what I had envisioned when I signed up for computer dating,” I stood and threw over my shoulder, “If only you weren’t so perfect.”
Still seated at the small café table, where a single red rosebud reclined between two porcelain demitasse cup-and-saucers with tiny enameled coffee spoons nestled beside each cup, it scratched its ear, which fell on the table, bounced once, and landed in the bowl of sparkling white sugar cubes.

Eegads, Liz! Now I’ve got visions of an ear laying in a bowl of “sparkling white sugar cubes”, lol. Nice scene setting. I wonder that it isn’t a scenario that one day may be commonplace.

It’s ear falling off was likely an attempt to not be so perfect. Of course, not being real would also be an imperfection.

Not at all a win-win for anyone or anything in this scenario, eh?

I supposed it’s a good idea to check out what exactly is meant by “computer dating” before signing up!
