The plaque on Andrew’s lap hummed, its runes flickering invitation, and the boy dropped his eyes from the strangely familiar face flickering beside him as if in dappled shadow, drawing them back down to the characters carved in the cool, muddy brass; he touched the runes with burnt fingers and pursed his lips to pronounce them out loud. Bethany revved her Jeep to catch up with the three, and pulled over to the side of the road on her unofficial detour to avoid road construction, dismissively flapping her hand at the motorist behind her who leaned on his horn and shouted an incoherent, but clearly rude epithet about her parentage, as he swerved around her. The freeway and most of the East Side’s roadways were shut down for the usual spate of State, County and local construction projects allowed by their short northern summers, but Bethany rolled down her Jeep’s windows and turned her car radio up so that everybody could enjoy Fleetwood Mac’s 1973 classic, “Hypnotized.” Continue reading
