The remaining three—Sangfroid, Plangeduc, and Redrue—arrived by late ferry, crossing the channel from mainland to island, easily mixing with the post tent-concert human crowd who were enthused and tipsy, some sufficiently high, so that the trio were barely noticed.

Jenna cracked her forehead on the dashboard, and left it there for a count of ten. Side-eying the fool behind the wheel, she pounded her forehead on its sun-hot surface for a beat of five.

“Please just pull over, Gerry.” She raised her head. “We’ve driven around this circuit at least four times. We’ll run out of gas before we even leave the train station lot.”

Odd had told her the barber shop was three blocks over from the warehouse they were squatting in. It wasn’t that they didn’t have money. They just didn’t want to use it for nonessentials. When he’d seen the ragged job she’d done cutting her hair, he’d decided: a proper clean up was essential. Annalisa stared down at the menu, a bead of sweat trickling down her temple in the dim light of late night. The other pages were just as crowded with options, all of them equally unappetizing, but she knew she had to make a decision, and knew that Rory, sitting opposite her at the patio table, was beetling his brows and tugging at his walrus-like mustache.  As was his habit, he waited in judgment, ready to trumpet his corrections to whatever choice she might make.
