I can’t say I hadn’t been warned. Emily knew one thing for sure: she was sick and tired of lassoing sheep in her Midwest town and pined to live on the beaches in France. She didn’t know French, or anyone in France, or anything about France except that she liked their fries, which for some reason, they called “Pomme Frites.” But the country called to her. Hildie was at her wit’s end. Franz had always been forgetful, more interested in the mechanics of lock-work, how to build a better mousetrap, and getting just the right measurements to repair the town’s old clock tower. His work was much admired, his prices more than reasonable, so his peculiarities were forgiven by the townsfolk and accepted as the oddities of a brilliant mind. Continue reading

All the To-do’s have been done: cat bowls cleaned and filled; appointments made and most delivered; floors vacuumed and kitchen linoleum scrubbed within an inch of its worn-fifties life; visits with friends — weak coffee and overpriced egg on toast, bacon a buck a slice – because it’s really mostly about catching up; glancing out the kitchen window at yesterday’s first seasonal mow, the red, resolute dandelion stems pushing their way through damp, fat clumps of clipped blades.
