“They’re way behind schedule,” Babette peers up at her sister, Esme, from the depths of the scrying pool, adding “Winter comes down hard in this part of the forest, and my two familiars haven’t been by to update their progress on leading Lenore and Jack through the woods.”
“I’m sure they’re well on their way,” Esme reaches to pull Cat up in her lap, absently stroking his silky back as she considers the risks, and finally settles on “The children need to come to you of their own free will, yes? So depending on their strength of character, it may take longer for them to reach you.”
“I get a keen sense that Lenore is a good candidate for apprenticing, but I can’t quite get a fix on J…” Babette grunts as her own Cat jumps on her shoulder, “Jack…he comes to me cloudy and shifting—always has—so I’m not sure what to expect and how to plan.”
The two cats hiss and meow to each other through the portal that allows the sisters to communicate directly, and Esme muses, “Well, they’re twins, so that soul connection is bound to muddy things.”
“No doubt, and they’re early teens so that complicates things as well,” Babette shifts her cat to her lap, and adds, “I’ll send a crow to you when they arrive.”

I’m glad I went and read the rest. It’s the problem with sufficient, it can make us lazy if we aren’t careful.

They’re teenagers and they’re twins, Liz? Quadruple the trouble, lol

Teens are tough to persuade if they aren’t convinced. Like Esme said, they are probably resisting.

Ah, crows. Faithful crows. I do enjoy this tale, Liz. Lovely.

What an interesting place in this deep forest where there is much magic and more. Love the cats especially (of course).

I find it very unfair that instead of scrying pools and crows I need to use the little black screen to communicate with people….
Imagine getting a letter by a crow… Ahh, and my love for cats makes me wanna port myself into the story…
Also, what I remember from my teenage years I think you are right… it may complicate things.

“…they’re early teens so that complicates things as well,”
ya think?
damn what I recall of that stage of life is a blur and I am decidedly not in my early teens*
*wait, maybe that’s part of the probably… ‘slow response portal’. lol yeah, that’s it

I like how they’re communicating through scrying pools and crows.
