Mugs clinked and libations splashed at Amelie’s Heavenly Café, amidst low chuckles and murmured remembrances. Proprietess Amelie licked crème brulee from her spoon, watching with wide eyes and mischievous smile, as two stylish gentlemen of indeterminate age and species drained their mugs, stood, and clapped each other’s shoulders.
At long last, prayers were being answered; these two WWI ace fighter pilots were finally being summoned for a vital mission: work together rather than against each other. Twenty-first century humans had lost their collective mind, and flying the skies with a scarlet-painted Fokker DR1 triplane and a Sopwith Camel shaped like a doghouse was the only sane response.
“Set them up for another round of root beer, Sophie,” whispered Amelie to her waitress, “Because it won’t take long for things to change for the better. Never underestimate the power of la surprise!”
