The challenge? Write a story in 6 sentences, no more & no less, and if you’d like, share your creation or just visit and comment on others’ ideas, with GirlieOnTheEdge, Denise. The prompt is “VAULT”, and here’s where you join the party: Six Sentence Stories
***
“Bring that light a little closer, willya…and stop breathing down my neck,” murmured Peter as he cracked his knuckles and wiped his hands on his night tunic.
“Is this really worth the risk?” Tomah hissed, casting a quick look over his shoulder as he brought the candle closer to the vault that promised their fondest wishes would be granted under the gibbous moon.
“Of course it is,” answered Peter, as he applied pick to lock, and smiled at the satisfying tumble of pins giving way, the gentle tug and snap that released the curved bar, followed by the easy scrape of unhooking the final barrier to bliss.
Their mouths watered at the scent of fresh-baked tarts, and cardamom buns; Luddy’s pie safe had been cracked, and there, behind the loaf of brandy-soaked Christmas bread, stood the tiny green bottle of Livean Dreams cordial.
“Now we have a party, for sure!” crowed Tomah, just before a heavy adult boot step interrupted the boys’ midnight pantry magic.

It is probably a good thing they got caught before they had that party rather than inevitably afterwards.

It was never worth it to be me because they always know who did it and you get in trouble anyway. Every generation has to figure that out for themselves.
Excellent six!

It made my day to see a gibbous moon live on in literature. In a world where language is waning with each passing day to see it waxing fair in your work is a joy. Halleluja! 🙂

Who doesn’t love a story about a prohibited midnight foray? And the ending, while sad for them, raised a smile for me!

Busted! I’m thinking Luddy’s going to crack something besides the pie safe.
Fun twist, the suspense led to an ending I didn’t expect.
