Disappeared 53

Six Sentence Stories

Joseph, light-headed, his legs shaking, peered down the ruined stairway that zigzagged down the cliff-side from the haunted mansion to the entrance to the Speakeasy tunnels where the Bethany had left her jeep.

“I sure could use a Scooby Snack about now,” he mumbled, adding, “I’m not so used to moving around on terra firma.”

Chucky reached deep into the front pocket of her shorts, and wiping the lint off a Smith Brothers cherry cough drop, said shyly, “It’s our last, cuz Daddy isn’t buying ‘em for us anymore, but you can have it, Papa Joe.”

“I’m honored to accept,” Joseph answered gravely, his voice catching as he popped the red drop in his mouth and savored. “No pomegranate seed shall ever again tempt me, with such sweetness at hand.”

Bethany’s eyes filled, her throat knotted with grateful tears; this was indeed her own Joseph, returned from the Underworld.

  1. Only a true father would eat a lint covered cough drop and say “No pomegranate seed shall ever again tempt me, with such sweetness at hand.” All the strands nicely pulled together as the adventure nears its satisfying end.
