Disappeared 43

If a heart could beat in the Shadowland, there would have been two rattling like a pair of snare drums: one with the boy, Andrew, at the edge of the sewer mudslide, wild, dark hair and lanky long limbs groping in panic to stop the brass plaque’s slide into the tumbling sewer water; the other frozen in time, green eyes wide in panic, mouth closed in a tight “o” over his dimpled chin, as if he could stop the crumbling limestone walls from fully collapsing and crushing the four young women of whom he’d grown quite fond.

Luckily, Chuckie and Ducks’ shriek frightened the ghosts of the speakeasy enough to cause them to freeze in surprise, and the spectral energy from this harmony of attention turned decades-long chaos into a kind of rhythm that settled the trembling warren of tunnels.

Whisky Nicolaysen straightened her spectral black turtleneck, and picked up the black watch cap buried under the limestone rubble piled on the floor in the Shadowland juice joint, while the piano player pocketed a boxed deck of cards and scanned the corners of the long-ago flooded speakeasy for his piano, patting his pockets for his hip flask, and the drummer picked up his sticks and started tapping on the wall, smiling as the beat grew and became more complex.

Smokin’ Fingers checked his ghostly pockets for his wad of purloined cash – no good to him as a ghost, but still a comfort –  and straightened his vest as he spotted Whisky and began to recall the last time he and she had joined in the flesh.

Visitors to the caves and the mansion above would notice and spread urban mythology about a different, more musical kind of haunting in future times. But in the present moment, Chuckie and Ducks scrambled deeper into the cavern, hot in pursuit of the Scottish Mage and Andrew’s rescue, while Eloise and Bethany stumbled blindly after the two tiny Twins.

  1. Two things: a) starting a Six in the middle of a high-energy action scene and 2) the ‘visual’ of the effects of the twin’s shriek on the other characters (in this scene)
    effective writing, y’all

  2. This installment seems, sounds like an ancient book of spells; after reading a few words, you are inside an enchanting song of words, where their meaning no longer matters…you are captivated and willingly carried away…
    Bravo, Liz.
