The Scottish mage leaned back and reviewed his many-decades residency in the Shadow World, his fingertips steepled, pointer fingers touched to lower lip; listening intently to the many threads of the family’s relationships as each was plucked, he finally discerned the melody and the strange harmonies of their connection.

“Amazing,” he murmured, as he noted their struggles, the hurt, laughter, petty fights among family members, and the gleaming, golden filigree of love, tarnished in spots by loneliness and longing, that intertwined all players, across time, but especially in the present.

He ran his fingers lightly over two twin strands and followed their path, away from the tiny house, across a set of weed-choked abandoned railroad tracks and toward a slow secluded part of the great river that ran through the larger metropolitan area and supported the lush, sheltering arms of a weeping willow, under which crouched two tow-headed girls, barely five years old and sharing a battered box of Smith Bros cherry cough drops.

“Once these are gone, I don’t s’pose we’ll ever get any more,” speculated one, savoring the sticky red sweetness dissolving on her tongue, peering into the box and between the waxed paper wrapping at the remaining few drops.

“Daddy’s just worn out – he’ll give us another box when he’s rested,” said the other, decisively biting down on her cough drop.

The two girls, Chuckie and Ducks, turned suddenly to glare at the mage, who flickered in and out between sun and shadow as a cooling wind blew off the river and moved the willow’s boughs, and said, “We know you bin watching us, so either come sid-down…or go ‘way!”
