Bonus Points

Wings around a heart with haloHe scanned her personal ad quickly before carefully composing his response and invitation; a woman with Suzy’s level of sophistication, stunning beauty, and sparkling sense of humor would not be on that dating site for very long, before she’d be wooed and snatched up by a bevy of beautiful boys.

He’d been watching her at their workplace (but not in a stalkerish way) for months now, keeping an ear to the ground for when her relationship with that jerk (Jerold McJerkinmeister the 5th) was going to end (as it inevitably would…and did…HA), and for the time she would feel safe and ready to start dating again. He didn’t want to be too brash and rush her, but he was a little shocked at how quickly she was ready to jump back on the horse again (he blushed, hotly, when he visualized that).

He thought about what he’d overheard when Suzy was talking with her BFF, Nora, in the coffee room, and then the other conversation Suzy’d had with another presumably female friend, on her office phone and in the confines of her personal cubicle (he’d dropped a paperclip just over the wall from her, and search as he might on his hands and knees, he hadn’t been able to recover it).

“Victory is mine,” he crowed under his breath when Suzy had accepted his invitation to meet for coffee and a croissant, at King Arthur’s coffee shop just down the street from their workplace, dressing carefully per her preferences.

“Oh my God, Wally,” she fairly shrieked when he showed up at the shop, a single red rose in his hand, and then laughed in softer, kinder tones, adding “I told Nora I was interested in amore, not in armour, but I guess you get bonus points for extra effort.”

  5. Oh, this is a fun one, Liz! I’ve a big smile on my face. I also have a lovely image of Wally crawling around on the office floor looking for the ‘lost’ paper clip. Just what I needed to read this morning 🙂

  9. That made me smile, Liz. He really is smitten, isn’t he? I feel such affection for all the effort he’s put in, but I can’t help worrying he’s going to get eaten alive! You’ve created such living characters.

  10. Such a critical micro-interval between the shriek of laughter and the modified, kinder tones to follow.

    Agree with Denise, pacing was excellent, nice balance of interest and obsession on Wally’s part.
