The challenge? Write a story in 6 sentences, no more & no less, and if you’d like, share your creation or just visit and comment on others’ ideas, with GirlieOnTheEdge, Denise. The prompt is “Change”, and here’s where you join the party: Six Sentence Stories
She strolled down the street, happy to be out in the crisp fall air, barely mindful of the slick spots underneath her purple hiking boots. Their region had made a definitive step from late Autumn to early Winter, with heavy rain just past midnight, followed by a hard freeze that had stripped the trees bare, saturating the early morning dapple with the heady funk of rotting leaves softening in the rising sun.
(Note this all happened in the time before COVID, and she’d headed out to the local Ma & Pa eatery for an early portion of eggs over medium, hash browns, and a rasher of bacon. She planned to relish the hell out of a bottomless cup of coffee at the solitary metal table and chair, dressed in her woolens and gloves, a selection of vintage fairytales cracked open to greet the day as the temps inched up toward near seventy degrees Fahrenheit.)
Whistling, she jingled the change in her jeans pocket, carefully-hoarded dollars folded into the worn leather wallet secured in the inner pocket of her hip-length navy pea coat; she hastened her step with a few joyful dance moves.
That was the last thing she remembered before her boots slipped out from under her on a hidden sheet of ice, and her head smacked the cement sidewalk.

PROMPT WORD: CHANGE
Ouch! As one who has had one too many falls, I hope she keeps on getting up and gets to breakfast!

Oh, no! I hate falling and the repercussions that ensue especially as one ages. It becomes more and more difficult to return to what once was.
You word painted a beautiful scene leading up to eventful moment on ice.

Repercussions, as long as no head concussions…😉❄❄

Such a lovely morning- until. Sure seemed real, I hope not. I still remember that feel, sound, taste of smacking my head on ice covered pavement from almost 50 years ago.

It’s the kind of memory that never quite fades…but then, you hope it it doesn’t, after all.

Oh, dear — i do hope she recovers and gets her coveted breakfast eventually. Sounds, though, like it will be in the hospital, at least on this day.

Ouch!
But enough of that, let’s get back to the “portion of eggs over medium, hash browns, and a rasher of bacon” and the bottomless cup of coffee.

I write fiction…so that breakfast is a favorite memory that also includes buttery triangles of toasted pumpernickel. We’ll get back there, some day soon!

As I age, my greatest fear is falling. I’ve done it twice now, once off a bike and once when I missed a step. Takes for ever to ‘recover’ and then nothing is the same.
Feel better. Good six.

You know it’s not so much the falling, but the landing, right? Yes, I need to worry more about this, as I’m aging, too…

Its amazing how huge the inside of the skull can seem when you return to consciousness…. there is such a sense of un-connectedness for hopefully a very, very short time
PS nice job with the surprise ending… totally mis-directed with the excellent scene drawing

Thank you! The bump is tender, but barely there. Lucky me!

I hope she was alright. I remember falling while walking on ice. It is like an instantaneous change in perspective.
