She swings again, the blunt-edged sword whistling past his ear by a hair’s breadth. He slices upward with his own wooden blade.
She arches her back like a wildcat, leather armor squeaking protest at the quick move, and follows with a roundhouse twist that lands her at his open left side.
A quick jab; she stops just short of his heart line.
He freezes, chest heaving, and peers at her shrewdly. “You’re slow today. Are you trying to fail?”
She laughs, troll’s tail flicking gleefully. “Maybe you’re getting old, Father.”
“Time to teach you about Statecraft,” he threatens playfully.

The relationship between the two characters draws me in to know them more. I laughed at the threat!

My failure was never learning to sword fight. Unless you count jabbing someone with swim noodles I bought at the dollar store. I’m pretty good with those. 😉 But yours is a skillful tale of fighters with skill, Liz!

My dad only taught me to box. Sword-fighting would have been a lot more effective.

Reminds me of some of the Biblical stories where the women took control either with a knife to smote the enemy or with ‘statecraft’ to save the ‘People’.
Women seem to know how to use instinct early on I’d say!
